As the temperatures start to soar in the City, it’s time to start thinking about plotting some gorgeous weekend escapes. One of our favorites is the divine La Maison Blanche hotel on Shelter Island.
La Maison Blanche is a rare hybrid offering the best of a French country inn with lashings of laid back Hampton’s charm. Alistair MacLean is one of the owners along with John Sieni and his personal touch makes Maison Blanche an absolute gem. Although he originally hailes from Scotland, Alistair spent the early part of his career working at ultra luxurious hotels like Claridges and The Ritz in London. After some time in St Tropez he went on to work at the fabulous Le Bristol hotel in Paris. When he moved to the US he managed legendary hotels like the Sunset Beach Hotel, Le Sereno in St Barths, The Standard in Downtown Los Angeles and The Raleigh in Miami. Nowadays Monday through Friday he can be found running the ultra stylish Smythe Hotel in Tribecca. However, on the weekends he’s hands on at his very own place on Shelter Island.
The rooms at La Maison Blanche are beautiful with crisp white linens and stylish yet relaxed French country chic decor. The property has a brand new swimming pool, pétanque courts and bikes for use to explore the island.
Shelter Island is a wonderful part of the Hamptons. It’s an island which can only be reached by ferry boat and perhaps because of that, has remained a charming enclave in the sometimes hectic Hamptons. Last year Dan’s Paper, the local Hamptons publication voted Maison Blanche the best hotel in the Hamptons and it’s restaurant the best French restaurant. A French chef from the City cooks up delectable inspired fare which has made the restaurant a hot destination not only for people with houses on Shelter Island but also for those throughout the Hamptons.
The hotel has it’s very own bakery so in true French style, you start your day with a delicious fresh pastry. They’ve also begun selling their very own Rosé produced just a few miles away on the North Fork of Long Island.
Shelter Island is only 2 1/2 hours from Manhattan by car but if time is of the essence, you can catch a Stnd Air sea plane, a new service owned by hotelier Andres Balazs, owner of his own Shelter Island hotel and the Standard Hotel chain. It departs from the East River, stops in East Hampton and then takes you directly to Shelter Island. The flights are $495 each way but they also offer a lottery system where you may be lucky enough to pick up a flight for a mere $29.
Whatever way you decide to travel, La Maison Blanche is a relaxing oasis on Shelter Island and the perfect place for a stylish getaway from the City.La Maison Blanche Hotel. 11 Sterns Point Road. Shelter Island, New York. 11965. Tel. 631 749 1633 StndAir
