The flagship Louis Vuitton store on 57th Street is awash with dots. In store you’ll find bags, accessories and ready to wear, all bearing Kusama’s signature spots in a range of colors.
There’s also a large scale Kusama installation on the Hudson River in the West Village, in conjunction with a show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Kusama is one of Japan’s most famous contemporary artists. She lived in New York in the 1960s where she found herself at the centre of the avant-garde art scene and considered Andy Warhol a rival. Famous for her work with both polka dots and nets, her current retrospective at the Whitney features works spanning Kusama’s long career. Included in the retrospective, an outstanding installation Fireflies on the Water which utilizes mirrors, lights and water to give the effect of endless space.
