A few years ago a famous hotelier who has a home on Shelter Island let us in on a well kept secret, a store named Beale and Bell. He explained that this is the store where he finds pieces for his legendary hotels as well as homes around the world. The store is nestled away in Greenport, the sleepy North Fork town, and we think it is one of the best antique stores we’ve ever found.
What makes it special is they sell both desirable and super unusual objects as well. They have a vast selection of modern furniture and the prices on everything are extraordinarily low. In this day and age of eBay and savvy antique dealers, especially in New York, this store is an absolute gem.
We go out of our way when heading to or from the Hamptons to find an excuse to call in here and see what treasure we can uncover. Even if you’re not heading to the Hamptons, Greenport is under two hours from New York City, an easy day trip.
A piece of insider advice, if you do go down for a day trip and load up your car with bootie from Beale and Bell, call in to Salamanders for lunch. Their fried chicken is legendary with many people swearing it’s the best on the East Coast. They also serve delicious freshly made salads and other yummy goodies making for a perfect day out of the City, a bit of shop, an eat, some ocean breezes, a fabulous day out.Beale and Bell. 430 Main Street.
