For nearly 50 years, Chuck Close has painted portraits of his friends and family in his own abstract yet super realistic style. Close’s process of initially capturing his subjects with photographs and then turning them in to two dimensional painting are carefully explored in this show. Large scale photographs of Close’s subjects are blown up to the same size as his enormous canvases.
The show includes never before seen paintings of Cindy Sherman as well as Close’s legendary paintings of infamous subjects such as Lou Reed. Brand new paintings of artists Kara Walker, Cecily Brown and song writer Paul Simon are also on show.
Displayed in the vast airy environment of Pace Gallery in Chelsea, it’s a terrific space to drink in the scale of these massive Chuck Close masterpieces.
