In this week of holiday shopping madness and New York City gridlock, a stroll through the Henry Moore sculptures at the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea may be the perfect elixir. There is something wildly elegant about the large-scale sculptures. Perhaps it’s because we are so used to seeing them outside in strong public spaces, so to see them grouped inside an enormous gallery is both pleasing and oddly relaxing.
Henry Moore, an Englishman (1898-1986) had his first solo exhibition in London in 1928 and by the late 1940s was one of England’s most celebrated artists. The abstract, organic and primitive forms of the enormous sculptures coupled with their voluptuous curves with a nod to the female form, makes this show feel just as relevant today as when they were first created.Henry Moore.
