The extraordinary photographs of life behind the scenes at the New York City Ballet by New York photographer Henry Leutwyler are on show at the Foley Gallery on the Lower East Side until January 12th.
Henry Leutwyler, a prize winning photographer, was initially hired by the New York City Ballet for a single photographic assisgnment. That soon turned in to four years of collaboration and eventually in to permission for rare access to take pictures backstage.
Henry Leutwylerʼs gift for capturing the essence of his subjects, has led to incredible photographs of such figures as Michelle Obama, Karl Rove, Julia Roberts, Tom Wolfe, Cate Blanchett, Beyonce Knowles, Nathan Lane, Rhianna, Martin Scorsese, and Spike Lee.
His work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Elle, Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New Yorker and Time. His photography, inspired by intimate working relationships with his subjects, has been an integral force behind the narrative of several art books.
Leutwyler’s work with the New York City Ballet has inspired a new book Ballet: Photographs of The New York City Ballet, published by Steidl. Whether you get the book or catch the art show, Henry Leutwyler’s photographs have intimately captured the essence of this incredible dance company.
