El Anatsui Arrives In Brooklyn

El Anatsui Earth's Skin

The extraordinary Ghanaian artist El Anatsui‘s first New York Museum show opened this month at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.  Using discarded materials he finds in his adopted country of Nigeria such as bottle tops and cans, Anatsui creates radically new sculptures of great beauty and depth.

The show includes 12 monumental wall and floor sculptures adapted specifically for this exhibition.  From a distance each appears to be made of sparkling precious metals or expensive textiles.  On closer inspection it’s incredible to see not only the simplicity of the materials, but you can’t help but think of the time-consuming process each tiny part of the sculpture must take to create.

To make art so powerful and exquisite out of pieces of metal discarded as worthless is thought-provoking on so many different levels.

Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui. Brooklyn Museum Of Art. 200 Eastern Parkway, Brookly, NY 11238. Tel. 718 638 5000. Closes August 4th.
