Katie Noonan’s extraordinary singing voice is one of the most acclaimed in her native Australia. With 4 ARIA awards (that’s the Australian Grammy’s) under her belt and six platinum albums, her versatile voice can make any genre of music incredible. As former lead singer of Australian indie band George, she also sings with folk/jazz trio Elixr, but her first love is jazz.
On the eve of her new world tour, which kicks off in New York this Thursday night, we spoke to Katie about why she’s starting the tour in New York. She explained that she spent time here in 2009 recording her album Blackbird with jazz legends Joe Lovano, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash and John Scofield and found the city totally inspiring. Whenever she’s here she always makes time to catch shows at places like Village Vanguard where she gets chills thinking of her music heroes like Miles Davis performing on the very same stage that still remains today.
This Thursday night she performs one night only at Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side. Playing a selection of songs from her career including jazz standards, songs from her indie and folk band collaborations and original songs from her new album Songbook, all accompanied by a Steinway Grand and a string quartet. Having worked with artists as diverse as Bruno Mars, Tim Finn and even performed as a soloist with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, you can image how amazing Katie’s voice is and we’re super excited to have the chance to hear her play in New York.
