To mark the opening of their impressive new gallery on West 20th Street, David Zwirner are presenting a magnificent exhibition of two of America’s most highly regarded minimalist artists, Donald Judd and Dan Flavin.
Much of the first floor of the exhibition is devoted to the remarkable light sculptures of Dan Flavin. Made simply with use of commercially available fluorescent lamps, the colors these sculptures cast are other worldly. We love how the light bounces between the sculptures and blends and spreads on the white gallery walls, creating the most astounding effect.
Donald Judd’s enormous industrial metal sculpture is on show in its own room. While the material is a stark contrast to the color in the rooms next door, the sculpture also plays with light. Because of the carefully placed metal components, the light moves through this piece in to the architectural space of the huge minimalist gallery, much like Flavin’s work does next door. The exhibition continues on the second floor with smaller but equally as important pieces on display.Dan Flavin and Donald Judd. David Zwirner Gallery. 547 West 20th Street, New York. 10001.
