A perfect way to beat the summer heat in New York is to spend a few hours in the virtually empty Chelsea galleries. While many galleries are shut in the month of August, there are still some stella shows to check out. We happened upon a wonderful group show at David Zwirner this week. Curated by Radolphe von Hofmannsthal the show sets out to connect the works, much as the media likes to connect subcultures, and give them a conveniently created label.
The pieces in the show are wildly different from Bran Griffith’s gallery sized bear head, sewn from canvas and installed like a tent with ropes and poles, to Jason Rhoades’s motorized scooter made out of steer horns and buckets. This is a terrific summer show to check out.Folk Devil. David Zwirner. 525 West 19th Street. New York. NY. 10011. Tel: 212 727 2070. Closes August 9th.
