Marlow Goods Farm to Fashion

DSC_0018

When you arrive at Marlow Goods in Brooklyn you are greeted by a shiny brass bell attached to an old-fashioned pulley system which lets the store know you’re here.  Stairs lead you upstairs and you walk through a busy prep kitchen (servicing Marlow & Sons restaurant below) making you feel like you are making a secret discovery when you arrive in the sun filled Marlow Goods store.

Marlow Goods is the brainchild of Kate Huling who with her husband Andrew Tarlow own locavore restaurants  Reynard at the Wythe Hotel, Marlow & Sons, Diner and Marlow & Daughters.  The restaurants pride themselves on working directly with farmers and sourcing grass-fed, organic meat.  Kate explained to us that one day she had an epiphany “we are now using the entire animal at the restaurants, yet throwing away the hides, why not turn the hides in to bags?” So she started Breton, a leather goods company creating extraordinary quality leather bags, made using natural dies and all produced locally.  Her farm to fashion ethos didn’t end there, through relationships with Upstate farmers Kate was soon harvesting wool, which she had spun in to yarn then created hand-loomed sweaters.  All of these products and more can be found at Marlow Goods.  They also stock products they love from other local artisans like jewelry, ceramics, throws, rugs and shoes.  You are reminded that food is an important part of the Marlow Goods world by the extensive selection of cookbooks and Staub cookware, which Kate herself swears once you cook with, you’ll become an instant convert.

Breton, the in-house designed line of clothing reminds us of the classic style of APC or Agnes B, in the sense that it’s both stylish but also utilitarian, creating only important wardrobe staples like trousers, shirts, skirts and knitwear. The clothes, bags and goods stocked at Marlow Goods are truly special, it reminded us of visiting a general store from a time gone by, except that the stock is filled with the coolest products Brooklyn has on offer.

Marlow Goods. 81 Broadway. Williamsburg. Brooklyn. NY. 11249. Tel: 718 384 1441 Open Tuesday – Saturday.  Noon-6pm or by appointment
