Artist Kara Walker has created awe-inspiring sculptures made of actual sugar in the disused former space of the sprawling industrial relic of the Domino Sugar Factory on the waterfront in Williamsburg. The pieces are the first works of this kind for Kara Walker, most famous for her provocative black cut-paper silhouettes.
The show’s very long title tells us all we need to know. “An Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant”. A series of small boys, crafted in dark brown sugar are spread throughout the enormous abandoned space, where you are led to the enormous sphinx-like sugar sculpture at the end of the warehouse, made entirely of white sugar.Kara E.
