‘Me, My Mother, My Father, and I” is the first New York museum exhibition of Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. The show at the New Museum takes up an entire floor. When you first walk in, you get the feeling that you’ve walked in to your college boyfriend’s giant dorm room. You are greeted by 10 guys playing guitar, surrounded by beer bottles. Some lounge on bare mattresses, others sit barefoot on the floor or on the kind of furniture you only find in your very first apartment.
The film playing on the wall is of the artist’s parents, both actors, and takes inspiration from Iceland’s first feature film, casting his parents in the role of the movie stars. All the while, the 10 guys are sipping beer and playing a beautiful piece of music composed by Icelandic band Sigur Rós, providing a wistful and evocative soundtrack for the movie.Ragnar Kjartansson: Me, My Mother, My Father And I.
