Winogrand The Ultimate Street Photographer

11._New_York,_1965_WinograndA retrospective of Garry Winogrand’s iconic photographs opened last week at The Met.  In a world where so many are obsessed by today’s street style photographers, it’s a real treat to see photographs of one of the true masters of the art. New Yorker Winogrand (1928-1984) was renowned for his candid street photographs taken in New York City and of American Life from the 1950s until the 1980s. Often associated with famed contemporaries Diane Arbus and Lee Friedlander, Winogrand photographed business moguls, everyday women on the street, famous actors and athletes, hippies, politicians, soldiers and even animals in zoos, his subjects were vast and always candid.

With 175 amazing photographs, many never seen before, this is an exhibition not to be missed this summer.
