Ladurée Soho Salon

DSC_9171Ladurée the legendary Parisian cafe famous for its delicious macaroons, has opened its second New York location in Soho.    At the front of the store are all the fabulous Ladurée treats, macaroons, exquisite pastries and tea, all of which you can have to stay or to go.  But at the back is Restaurant Ladurée, where you can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The restaurant is dripping with old-world elegance and a perfect excuse for tea and cakes at time of the day.  The fact that you can also grab a glass of champagne or a yummy french meal makes Restaurant Ladurée extra special and a fabulous new addition to the Soho food scene.

Dear Bushwick

DSC_0074Bushwick is the fast growing epicenter of all things cool in Brooklyn.  The next stop on the L train after Williamsburg, taste makers and hipsters priced out of the Williamsburg market have made the move.  Bushwick is a burgeoning hotspot for innovative restaurants, stores and cafes so we headed over this weekend to check it out.

We started the morning grabbing coffee at Cafeteria La Mejor, decorated like a Miami cafe and filled with a gorgeous crowd getting their morning joe.  We ordered a Cafe Con Leche (cappuccino with a hint of butter and  salt).  It was divine and worth a trip to Bushwick just for flavor of this amazing coffee drink. They also serve cuban sandwiches and pastries with irresistable fillings like coconut and key lime.

Next we headed over to Bushwick Cooperative housed in a former construction office on a picturesque side street.  Run by photography and fashion world veteran, John Gilliland, the store is a home for all things stylish, well designed and cool.  We loved the city scape Chalk Ware by Matt Austin Studio and the wild patterned stockings by Strathcona.

Our last stop was lunch at Dear Bushwick, a wood-panelled gastro-pub which pays homage to all things British.  The food was a modern take on classic British food with delectable dishes like shired eggs stewed in navy beans and garlic, sticky gingerbread with sea salt butter, sugar spiced bacon and of course, a full English breakfast.  Open for dinner, Dear Bushwick’s cosy interior is home to a happening cocktail scene in the evenings and in summer a large garden out back makes the restaurant more than double in size.

Hauser And Wirth’s Hidden Bar

DSC_0262When you enter the epic striped staircase at Hauser & Wirth gallery in Chelsea, you could easily miss the glass encased “Roth New York Bar” above you.  Encased behind a large sheet of glass, this bar is one of New York’s hidden gems.  An homage to the work of Swiss artist Dieter Roth (1930-1998) the bar was created this year by Björn Roth, Dieter’s son and Oddur Roth, his grandson, who’ve created a living installation of the artist’s work.  On Fridays and Saturdays, you can stop by for a perfect espresso or cocktail and enjoy an exceptional drink in an extraordinary space.

The bar has industrial windows on one side that take in the view of far West Chelsea and the enormous window on the other side looks directly in to the gallery.  A cosy and intimate bar, candles burn and drip wax on to sculptures, and if you are lucky enough to nab a seat at the long wooden bar, you’ll be surrounded by Roth’s pieces like ice skates and busts encased in cabinets above the sparkling liquor bottles.

The Cult of The Cronut

cronut copyIf you find yourself walking along Spring Street in Soho you’ll find a line that twists along the block each and every morning.  It is here that devotees of the cronut wait patiently every morning for the chance to buy up to two cronuts (yes that’s all you are allowed).

The cronut is the creation of chef Dominique Ansel and was launched on to the New York food scene in May of this year.  He has created a hybrid that people liken to having the texture of a perfect croissant coupled with the delicious fried texture of a donut.  Cronut’s are baked fresh every morning in small batches and when they run out, they are done for the day.  The bakery opens every morning at 9am and people begin lining up as early as 6.30am each morning in order to be sure that they can get their hands on the delectable treat.

The cronut’s do not keep, to get the true cronut experience you need to eat them immediately.  They retail at $5 per cronut and if you need more than two, you can make it happen as long as you make your order at least a month ahead.

The Shipping News

IMG_6069This week saw the opening of Incuboxes or shipping containers as the rest of us might call them, at Pier 57 in the West Village.  Brightly colored shipping containers selling food and groovy summer gear have arrived in this previously abandoned warehouse on 15th Street and the Hudson River.

This is the beginning of a plan that by spring of 2015 will see the entire pier filled with shipping containers, with the pier completely made over as a home of not only retail and food vendors, but also as a cultural centre with the Tribeca Film Festival running an outdoor venue on the roof of the pier.

For now it’s small but quite lovely on a hot summer’s day if you are in the West Village or happen to be riding your bike along the West Side Highway.  There’s a container from The Butcher’s Daughter, Nolita’s delicious juice bar and vegetarian cafe, you can pick up a pair of cute summer shoes and a beach throw from Soludos, there are art installations, a BBQ container, another selling artisan coffee and tea and all with the view of the Hudson River at the end of the pier.

All Good Things

DSC_0039Trust TriBeCa to make the ultimate in urban food markets.  All Good Things is a perfect market in every way. First off it’s tiny, which means none of the overwhelming crowds that many of New York’s food markets have.  Housed in a beautiful old floor through store, the airy, light-filled market offers separate counters for different artisanal vendors.

If you’re shopping for dinner there’s Dickson’s Farmstand Meat’s, serving local grass-fed meat.  There’s a produce and seafood stand and the wonderful baker Orwasher’s for bread.  If you’re simply looking for something little and yummy, there’s Brooklyn’s Nunu Chocolates, Blue Marble Ice Cream and for a perfect cup of coffee, Blue Bottle Coffee.   If eating out is more your speed, there’s a casual cafe in the back, and for a true foodie experience you can head downstairs to Le Restaurant where chef Ryan Tate (formerly of Savoy and Cookshop) creates a $100 six-course menu.

At the front of the market is our favorite counter, Polux Fleuriste.  This is no ordinary run of the mill florist, here they create whimsical, show stopping floral displays that will transform your meal or your home in to a romantic floral wonderland.
