Make Up Like Milk

9N9A0370

There are so many new beauty products on the market that are totally to die for.   Milk Makeup is one of our favorite new brands.  Designed by fashion insiders in New York, the products are innovative, well priced and the packaging is to die for.  We love the blush, which comes in a push-up bottle and while looking crazy bright, gives an incredible natural glow.

The mascara comes in a soft tube and it’s curvy brush makes for killer lashes.

The Primary Essentials

DSC_9781The Primary Essentials is one of those addictive stores that makes us want to visit often because we want absolutely everything we lay our eyes on.  Located on Atlantic Avenue in South Brooklyn, this super hip retail strip is fast becoming one of the best shopping areas in Brooklyn. The Primary Essentials is a one stop shop for anyone who loves good design.

DSC_9724

The store is the brain child of Lauren Snyder, a former fashion stylist, whose incredible eye is apparent from the gorgeous store design (though she admits to help from her architect boyfriend) to the beautiful and unique items she seeks out for the store.

DSC_9844

Lauren’s standards for what she sells make perfect sense, she explained to us that she seeks out only what is functional, special, unique and beautiful, in essence only what she would want to buy for herself. Many items in store are sourced locally and most made in small batches, like the exquisite heirloom quality linens from designers like Auntie Oti and Caroline Z. Hurley.

Trying to only stock items that someone would truly have space in their life for, the store is filled with gorgeous discoveries.  We were fascinated with Equilateral Nails, beautiful simple nails (which look like jewelry themselves) to display your jewelry on the wall. They also carry a lovely selection of gorgeous modern jewelry and accessories.

If you love ceramics, then The Primary Essentials will be your new favorite haunt. They carry a vast array of stand-out pieces including ceramics from Clam Lab and Brooklyn based Helen Levi.

We love Lauren’s fabulous taste so asked her to give us a list of her favorite neighborhood hangouts in South Brooklyn.

Stanley’s Pharmacy

Store_Front_SelectStanley’s Pharmacy on the Lower East Side is a vibrant breath of fresh air.  Its clean modern exterior and bright orange signage offer a hint of what’s inside.   With a giant photograph of a beautiful ocean scene taking up an entire wall, you feel instantly calm the minute you enter.  As well as being able to pick up a prescription, there’s a wellness bar serving fresh made elixirs, home-made teas, juices and cures for just about anything imaginable.

Stanley’s is the brain child of Stanley George, a veteran pharmacist who can be found in store, in his sleek white safari suit, dispensing his excellent advice, elixirs and prescriptions. Tomorrow is the first day of spring so we asked Stanley for some insider’s advice on staying healthy.

Side_Angle_StanleyCloseUp_Ocean

WWL: What’s your recommendation for a hangover cure?

Stanley – My hangover cure is a triple threat combo:

* Kombucha to raise up the levels of your body’s pH (kombucha is a metabolic alkalinizer)

* Stanley’s Pharmacy Hangover Tea with Nettle leaves, Lapacho Bark and Hawthorne Berries to detox your liver (Super refreshing over ice!)

* 2 Advils to get the blood flowing

One hour later you are golden – this works like magic!

IMG_3005

WWL: Tomorrow is the first day of spring (horray!).  What’s your advice on natural ways to fight off seasonal allergies?

Stanley:  Everyone gets affected differently by seasonal allergies.  Sometimes drugs work best (I am a pharmacist so I do advocate drugs) however there are a lot of natural products that can do wonders!
* For overall immunity super foods like Bee Pollen and raw honey taken as a supplement have the potential to decrease your susceptibility to some symptoms of seasonal allergies.
* That Dry Patch in your throat – Sabadil is a product made by the homeopathic company Boiron.  The active ingredient is sabadilla, a plant which has been used for hay fever and allergies since the 16th century.
* For congestion and runny nose, pharmaceutical agents like the Pseudoephedrine containing products can make some people feel a bit too “speedy”.  This is where I would recommend a nasal douche for natural relief. The Alkalol  Nasal Wash Kit is by far the best in this category.  It’s a natural mucous solvent that’s been around for over a hundred years and the formulation hasn’t changed since.  It feels great and comes with a really compact nasal douche.
* Another really cool trick is an herbal concoction we use at the Stanley’s Pharmacy Wellness Bar.  It’s called the “Sinus Soldier” and here we brew a concentrated batch of peppermint tea then add a dropperful of horseradish tincture – WHOO!  It’s like drinking vapor rub and it feels GREAT when you’re congested
IMG_3251

WWL: What’s a daily juice or supplement you would recommend to keep us healthy year round?

Stanley: For overall health I would say to start your day off with a few glasses of water upon waking to rev up your metabolism then move to a raw juice, smoothie or fruit to cleanse your digestive system and ease it into the day.
If I could only pick one healthy supplement to do on daily basis it would have to be the E3 Live Blue Green Algae.  It’s a live aquabotanical that blooms on one of the oldest volcanic lakes in the world.  One shot glass of this stuff is filled with tons of B vitamins, fatty acids, minerals and enough chlorophyll to put a wheatgrass shot to shame (sorry wheatgrass : / ).  It’s literally one of the most nutrient dense superfoods on the planet!
IMG_4172

WWL: What’s the most popular drink sold at Stanley’s Pharmacy?

Stanley: Hmm …. well right now with all the crazy weather we’re having in NYC and so many people getting sick I would say the “Immune Influencer” is running neck and neck with the Stanley’s Pharmacy “Hangover Cure” – though I imagine that will change once the weather warms.
