Summer Friday’s: Sir Kensington’s Scott And Mark

Mark and Scott

We have to admit to being slightly obsessed with Sir Kensington’s.  No it’s not a new restaurant or a hot young artist, but rather a line of ketchups and condiments that have become the only bottles to have on your table this summer.
In 2008 when Scott Norton and Mark Ramadan were seniors at Brown University, Malcolm Gladwell wrote a New Yorker story on the impossibility of competing with Heinz ketchup.  The pair, who had never really cooked anything, decided to take on that challenge and judging by the plethora of foodie restaurants in New York and national supermarket chains like Wholefoods, (who even serve it in bulk in their cafes) they have achieved their goal.  We asked Sir Kensington’s founders, Scott and Mark, to share their summer weekend plans for the latest installment of our Summer Friday’s feature.

  • ESCAPE- Where are you traveling to?

This weekend I’m headed to Martha’s Vineyard to visit friends, head to the beach, and do some bike riding.

  • PLAYLIST – What will you be listening to?

I’ve recently been into the Fixtape series by the LA based bicycle company Solé.  Great summer disco and electro-pop vibes.

  • MENU – What will you be cooking or eating?

One of my favorite things to cook and eat with a big group of people is pizza.  My girlfriend and I have a highly unconventional method of making dough that involves a rolling-pin. They’re thin, so you can cook them in a normal oven that only reaches 500°, and we have a couple of crowd-pleasers we like to make, such as our “American Breakfast” with thinly sliced fingerling potatoes, bacon, and a fried egg on top as well as the “Bee Sting,” a honey, goat cheese, and chili oil pizza borrowed from the Roberta’s menu.

  • READING – What are you planning to read?

Typically the Kindle spoils with choice. But currently I’m catching up on National Geographic and three issues of The Economist that arrived at my apartment when I was out of town.

  • LOOK – What will you be wearing?

As far as summer essentials, I have a pair of Saturdays Surf board shorts that my friend customized by sewing in parts of an American flag from a sailboat.  Those, and a pair of  crap sunglasses have served me well.

  •  ESCAPE – Where are you traveling to?

To the North Fork of Long Island, where I’m very much looking forward to vineyard tours and eating fresh seafood.

  • PLAYLIST – What will you be listening to?

I’ve been listening to a lot of minimalist electro recently, in particular Dawn of Midi.

  • MENU – What are you looking forward to cooking or eating?

Any meal that doesn’t include fish tacos and guacamole may as well not be a meal.

  • READING – What do you hope to read?

I’m reading Bill Bryson’s book “At Home” – it’s a fascinating history of everyday things in the home you never really think about.

  • LOOK – What will you wear or what do you always like to take with you?

I always have my Rag & Bone Briefcase with me – it fits just the right amount for a weekend away as well as a day at work.

We will be at our summer spot in Montauk for part of the weekend and then leaving for India on Sunday.  I am excited to go to Jaipur and research block prints.

I am super into the new Arctic Monkeys album but I always fall back on Reggae and Hawaiian musician when we are grilling and hanging out in the evenings out east.  My son is obsessed with pop music so I won’t lie and deny, there’s been some Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry in the mix.

Summer produce!  All I want to eat is tomato salads and grilled corn and peaches and plums and apricots. You don’t have to be left coast to rely on seasonal and local!

I am reading “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls” by David Sedaris and then some heavier fare – “Americanah” by  Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and “We Are Completely Beside Ourselves” by Karen Joy Fowler.  I’m also trying to space out and watch the clouds go by.

ESCAPE – Where are you traveling to?

I’m going to a lake house in Canada, a magical place I’ve visited for the last several years.  It belongs to dear friends from London, who having spent years living in Tokyo, decided to build a Japanese style lake house as their summer home.

PLAYLIST – What will you be listening to?

I always check out the playlists from Colette in Paris and this year their Summer  2014 Podcast is brilliant.   A perfect soundtrack for the summer!

MENU – What will you be cooking or eating?

We grill every evening but I like to take charge of breakfast.  I’m currently obsessed with the homemade granola recipe from Baked in Redhook.  I’m giving the Baked cookbook as a gift for the house and wowing everyone with the homemade granola at breakfast daily.

LOOK – What will you be wearing?

Each guest at the house is given their own beautiful Yukata (long Japanese robe)  to wear, so I wear mine constantly.  Other than that, my J Crew striped rash guard, Opening Ceremony bikini and Karen Walker sunglasses are all I live in here as we are either on the lake swimming or relaxing in the house’s amazing Onsen (Japanese bathhouse).

  • ESCAPE – Where are you travelling to?

I’m going to the Brimfield Antique Show!  We’re in serious need of timeless furniture to make our apartment feel like a home and the selection at Brimfield is amazing.  We hardly have any furniture so I’m really hoping to score.  I’d also like to get a nice table for the WWAKE atelier.  My goal is to make a hospitable place for everyone to visit!

  • PLAYLIST –  What will you be listening to?

FKA Twigs just released a new single, which I have on repeat – but the new Protomartyr album is perfect for the car ride. It’s melodic and heavy at the same time and a long car ride out of the City is the perfect time to enjoy it!

  • MENU – What will you be cooking or eating?

Simple cold noodle dishes, made before the road. My new favorite is Vietnamese rice noodles tossed with pan-fried shrimp, lemon, and fresh herbs – mmmhm!
